Huntsville, AL – Northern Alabama and parts of southern middle Tennessee face a heightened risk of severe storms today, with the most dangerous period expected between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Huntsville.

According to NWS forecasters, clusters of storms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front moving through the Tennessee Valley. Some storms could turn severe, producing damaging winds up to 60 mph, heavy rainfall, and isolated hail. The agency also noted a moderate risk for flash flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage.

Storm timing will vary by location, with the Florence area most likely affected from 2–5 p.m., Huntsville between 3–7 p.m., and areas near Fort Payne and Stevenson facing the strongest activity from 4–9 p.m.

The weather service urged residents to have multiple ways to receive warnings and to remain alert throughout the afternoon and evening. “While not every storm will be severe, the strongest storms could bring significant impacts, including flooding and hazardous travel,” the agency said in a Wednesday morning update.

Drivers are advised to avoid flooded roadways, and residents should prepare for possible brief power outages caused by high winds.
