Northeastern West Virginia – Heavy snow and gusty winds are expected to create hazardous travel conditions through early Saturday, as a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, the Winter Storm Warning continues until 6 a.m. Saturday for Eastern Preston County and Tucker County.

Forecasters expect total snowfall between 5 and 8 inches, with wind gusts up to 50 mph. The combination of falling and blowing snow may significantly reduce visibility, with conditions at times dropping below one-quarter mile, particularly in exposed and higher-elevation areas.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, making travel difficult, especially during the Friday evening commute. Snow-covered roads, blowing snow, and sudden visibility changes could lead to hazardous driving conditions across the region.

Communities included in the warning area include Terra Alta, Rowlesburg, Hendricks, Saint George, Parsons, Thomas, Davis, Canaan Valley, Hazelton, and Rowlesburg, where impacts may intensify overnight.

While snowfall rates may fluctuate, persistent winds are expected to cause drifting snow, particularly on open roadways and ridgelines. Drivers may encounter near whiteout conditions in heavier snow showers.

Emergency officials advise motorists to use caution or delay travel if possible. Those who must drive should reduce speed, allow extra following distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing road and visibility conditions.

The National Weather Service encourages residents to report snowfall totals to assist with storm monitoring. Snow accumulations can be shared by calling 412-262-1988, posting on the NWS Pittsburgh Facebook page, or tagging @NWSPittsburgh on X.

Snow and wind impacts are expected to gradually lessen toward daybreak Saturday as the storm system moves east of the region.
