Duluth, Minnesota – Smoke continues to cloud Duluth skies Sunday, with reduced visibility and moderate air quality concerns expected through the afternoon. Light winds and stagnant conditions are trapping smoke near the surface, especially along Lake Superior and in low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the region will remain hazy until at least Monday morning, followed by a slight chance of showers through midweek. Thunderstorm chances increase significantly by Wednesday, particularly in St. Louis County and areas inland along U.S. Highway 2.

Winds will shift throughout the week, with gusts reaching 15 mph by Tuesday afternoon. The stronger southwest breeze on Wednesday could help disperse lingering smoke, but may also usher in thunderstorms—some with lightning and brief downpours. Travel could be impacted during afternoon and evening commutes.

Those sensitive to poor air quality should limit outdoor exposure through Monday, especially children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions. Drivers are also urged to use headlights and reduce speed if visibility drops below 3 miles.

Conditions remain unsettled into Thursday with storms possible again Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Updates to watches or advisories may follow as storms develop.
