Chicago, IL – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across Cook County tonight, bringing the threat of damaging winds, large hail and localized flooding across the Chicago metro area through early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago office, storms are expected to push into northeastern Illinois around 8 p.m. and continue into the overnight hours as a powerful line of thunderstorms moves east across the state.
While the highest tornado threat appears slightly south of Chicago, Cook County communities including Chicago, Cicero, Oak Lawn, and Schaumburg could still see severe storms capable of producing hail around two inches in diameter and wind gusts over 60 mph.
Heavy downpours may also lead to localized flooding on urban roadways, especially in areas with poor drainage. Fast-moving storms traveling east-northeast at 30 to 40 mph could quickly impact major corridors including I-90, I-94, and the Kennedy and Dan Ryan expressways.
Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts, secure outdoor objects and be prepared to move indoors quickly if warnings are issued. Interior rooms away from windows offer the safest shelter during severe storms.
Additional watches or warnings may be issued tonight as storms approach the Chicago metro area.
