Green Bay, Wisconsin – Hazardous travel conditions are expected across parts of northeastern Wisconsin late Sunday into Monday, as Winter Weather Advisories take effect for Door and Vilas counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, Door County is under a Winter Weather Advisory from 3 a.m. to noon CST Monday. Forecasters expect up to one inch of snow, but northwest wind gusts up to 45 mph will cause considerable blowing and drifting snow, particularly as fresh snow is blown inland from the Bay of Green Bay.
The National Weather Service warns that brief whiteout conditions are possible late tonight into mid-morning Monday, significantly reducing visibility on roads. These conditions are expected to impact the Monday morning commute, especially on exposed roadways. Strong winds may also bring down tree branches, resulting in isolated power outages. Wind chills in Door County are forecast to drop to 10 to 15 below zero late tonight into Monday morning.
In Vilas County, a separate Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Sunday to 9 a.m. CST Monday. Lake-effect snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible. Northwest wind gusts exceeding 30 mph may lead to blowing and drifting snow, especially in open areas.
Across both advisory areas, slippery roads, reduced visibility, and rapidly changing conditions are expected. Bridges, overpasses, and rural highways may become hazardous in a short period of time, even where snowfall totals remain modest.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time, particularly during overnight and early morning hours. Road condition updates are available by dialing 511.
