Green Bay, Wisconsin – Patchy freezing drizzle moving into northeast Wisconsin tonight may create slick travel conditions ahead of a longer-lasting wintry system.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service office in Green Bay, freezing drizzle is expected to move north from the south this evening, with the greatest risk for slick spots on untreated roads and surfaces along and south of Highway 10. Officials warn that even light icing can quickly lead to hazardous driving conditions.
Attention then shifts to a broader wintry weather system forecast to arrive late Thursday and continue through midday Friday. The National Weather Service reports precipitation will vary across the region, with mostly snow expected in northern Wisconsin where temperatures remain below freezing, while areas farther south are more likely to see rain. A mix of freezing rain and drizzle is possible in between.
Forecast graphics shared by the agency indicate that much of northeast Wisconsin could see up to one-tenth of an inch of ice, particularly from Friday morning into midday Friday. Areas highlighted include portions of central and north-central Wisconsin, where icing may coincide with snow or mixed precipitation.
The National Weather Service notes that precipitation type changes are likely as temperatures fluctuate, increasing the potential for travel impacts. Snow accumulation in the north combined with icing farther south could affect post-holiday travel across the region.
Officials urge drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and monitor updated forecasts as conditions evolve. Bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads are expected to be especially vulnerable to icing.
Commuters, holiday travelers, and commercial drivers should remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions from tonight through Friday morning.
Residents are encouraged to check local forecasts and road conditions before traveling, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.
