Green Bay, Wisconsin — An intense Arctic air mass is expected to overspread northeast Wisconsin late this week, bringing dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills ranging from 20 to 40 degrees below zero from Thursday night through Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Green Bay.
Forecasters say the cold will become widespread as Arctic air settles across the Great Lakes region. The most hazardous conditions are expected overnight and during the early morning hours, when brisk winds combine with frigid temperatures to produce life-threatening wind chills.
The National Weather Service warns that frostbite could develop on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, particularly during periods of strongest wind. Communities across the region, including Green Bay, Appleton, Wausau and surrounding areas, are likely to experience prolonged stretches of extreme cold.
Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, cover exposed skin, and bring pets indoors. Officials also recommend checking on elderly neighbors and ensuring vehicles are winter-ready in case of emergencies.
The bitter cold is expected to persist into the weekend before gradually easing. Additional wind chill advisories or warnings are likely as the Arctic air mass moves fully into place.
