Charleston, WV – Cooler and drier weather is expected across West Virginia heading into the weekend, but residents in the northeast mountains should prepare for frost and freezing temperatures over the next few days.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday for the northeast mountains, where temperatures could dip into the low to mid-30s. A Freeze Watch follows late Thursday night into Friday morning, with temperatures possibly dropping into the mid-20s.

These cold conditions could harm sensitive vegetation and potentially damage outdoor plumbing if not protected. Gardeners and homeowners are advised to cover plants and disconnect hoses to prevent freezing.

By Friday and Saturday, temperatures are expected to rebound into the 60s and 70s across lowlands, with continued dry conditions and mostly sunny skies. However, frost remains possible in higher elevations through early Saturday morning.

The weather shift marks the start of a more seasonable October pattern, with clear skies and crisp fall mornings across much of the state.
