New York–Northeast Region – A post-Christmas winter storm is placing more than 23 million people under winter storm warnings, bringing heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain across parts of the Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast.
According to the NOAA National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, the storm is producing a multi-hazard wintry mix that is expected to create hazardous travel conditions from Friday into Saturday morning.
Forecast guidance shows freezing rain accumulations exceeding one-quarter inch from northwest Pennsylvania into western Maryland, where scattered tree damage and power outages are possible. A hazardous mix of sleet and freezing rain is also likely from central Pennsylvania through the Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia metro areas.
Farther north, a swath of heavy snowfall is forecast from central New York through northeast Pennsylvania, extending into the New York City tri-state area. The Weather Prediction Center indicates at least six inches of snow is likely in much of this zone, with locally higher amounts possible.
The greater New York metropolitan area accounts for a large share of the warned population. The agency noted that Central Park has not recorded four inches or more of snow since January 7, 2022, underscoring the significance of this event.
The storm is expected to generate treacherous post-holiday travel conditions, particularly for commuters and travelers returning after Christmas. Motorists are urged to monitor updates and check local forecasts before traveling.
