Providence, R.I. – Boaters and beachgoers along the southern New England coast are being urged to stay off the water as a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect through 10 p.m. Thursday, with strong winds and large hail possible across multiple marine zones.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 484 includes Boston Harbor, Rhode Island Sound, Narragansett Bay, Long Island Sound, and New York Harbor. The advisory, issued at 1:30 p.m. EDT, warns of potential wind gusts up to 60 mph and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning through the evening hours.

Hazardous conditions could impact ferry services, recreational boating, and shoreline travel from Peconic and Gardiners Bays to the South Shore bays of Long Island. Cities including Providence, New Haven, and coastal parts of New York City may also experience sudden storm surges and heavy rainfall. Emergency managers are advising residents to secure outdoor items and delay non-essential marine travel.

This marks the third severe thunderstorm event in the region this week, following a string of July weather disturbances. Officials warn that additional storm watches may be issued as the system tracks northeast overnight.
