Boston, MA – A widespread winter storm is increasing in probability for early next week, with forecasters warning that heavy snow, significant icing, and hazardous travel could impact millions from the Mid-Atlantic to the Northeast. The early-season system is expected to strengthen Monday and track along the East Coast through Tuesday, posing major concerns for communities along and west of the I-95 corridor.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, confidence is rising that a developing low-pressure system from the Gulf Coast will move up the seaboard, tapping into cold air across the interior Northeast. More than 6 inches of snow is possible north and west of I-95, with probabilities exceeding 50% in parts of Pennsylvania, New York, and New England.

The southern and central Appalachians face an added threat: treacherous icing, with at least a tenth of an inch of ice possible in multiple zones. Even small amounts of ice could trigger downed limbs, power outages, and hazardous conditions on elevated roadways.

Travel along major East Coast highways—including I-95, I-81, and I-84—may become difficult or dangerous during the Monday evening through Tuesday morning window. Untreated roads, overpasses, and high-elevation routes are expected to be especially at risk if snow and ice develop as forecast.

Officials urge residents to monitor updates closely as the timing and track of the storm may shift, influencing snow totals and the exact location of the ice band.
