Tulsa, Oklahoma – Thunderstorms with dangerous lightning and pockets of heavy rain are expected to roll into eastern Oklahoma Friday afternoon, threatening travel ahead of Father’s Day weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, the first storms will likely develop after 1 p.m. Friday, with rainfall totals increasing into the evening. While widespread severe weather isn’t expected, lightning and brief downpours could affect drivers, especially along highways like US-412 and the Broken Arrow Expressway.

Localized showers may stick around through early Saturday, with another round of storms possible Saturday afternoon and into Sunday. The NWS warns that storm chances will persist across eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas through at least Wednesday, with Friday and Saturday seeing the highest risk for heavy rain.

Residents in Tulsa, Muskogee, and Tahlequah should remain alert for lightning, flooded roads, and rapidly changing weather Friday into Saturday. Spotter activation is not expected, but those with outdoor plans should monitor local alerts and consider alternate indoor activities for Friday evening.

Though conditions begin to improve late Sunday, a warming and humid trend is expected to follow. Highs could approach 89°F by Monday, making it feel more like midsummer than mid-June.

More thunderstorms may return by Tuesday.
