Tulsa, Oklahoma – Thunderstorms are expected to intensify across eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas this afternoon, bringing lightning, gusty winds, and localized downpours to the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, storm activity is already underway across parts of southeastern Oklahoma as of Thursday morning. Coverage will increase into the afternoon and evening, with a 30–40% chance of thunderstorms in cities including McAlester, Hugo, Muskogee, and Fort Smith. Fayetteville and Miami, meanwhile, face a lower 10–20% chance of storms.

The main threats include frequent lightning, locally heavy rainfall, and gusty winds. Severe weather is not expected, but forecasters urge residents to stay weather-aware and monitor updates throughout the day.

Outdoor events and afternoon commutes could be briefly affected, especially where lightning is present. If thunder is heard, the NWS advises moving indoors immediately and avoiding outdoor shelter.

Storm chances diminish overnight, but scattered showers could linger into early Friday. Another round of thunderstorms may develop over the weekend.
