Cleveland, Ohio – Beach plans in northeast Ohio could take a hit Friday as a fresh round of afternoon storms targets the Lake Erie shoreline, bringing rain, thunder, and a moderate rip current risk. The National Weather Service warns swimmers and boaters to avoid Lake Erie beaches on Friday due to dangerous surf, particularly near Cleveland and along Route 2.

According to the NWS office in Cleveland, the risk of rip currents will peak Friday afternoon. Thunderstorms are most likely between 3 and 4 p.m., with new rainfall amounts expected to remain under a tenth of an inch. Winds will shift from northeast to northwest, gusting up to 11 mph, which may contribute to choppy lake conditions and reduced visibility on the water.

Rain chances return Friday night and continue through early Monday, potentially impacting Father’s Day weekend plans across Cuyahoga, Erie, and Lorain counties. Saturday brings another round of showers, with higher rainfall totals possible. Roads near the lake and local parks could see ponding during downpours.

Sunday remains unsettled, though drier breaks are expected. By Monday, another chance of rain arrives alongside temps climbing back near 78°F.

Beach Safety Tip: If you’re heading to the lake, swim near lifeguards and obey posted warnings. Rip currents can form suddenly—even under partly sunny skies.

Next Update: A fresh advisory is possible Friday morning if rain chances increase or rip current risks intensify.
