Youngstown, Ohio – Heavy thunderstorms have drenched Mahoning County Monday morning, prompting a Flood Advisory and raising concerns about minor flooding in low-lying and poorly drained neighborhoods.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, the advisory remains in effect until 1:45 p.m. Monday. Radar detected 1 to 2 inches of rainfall over the area with another half to 1.5 inches possible before conditions improve. Communities at risk include Youngstown, Boardman, Campbell, Canfield, Austintown, Struthers, Poland, Ellsworth, New Middletown, Lowellville, and Greenford.
Street flooding and standing water are most likely near intersections, underpasses, and rural roads across Mahoning County. Residents are urged to avoid driving through water-covered roadways, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles. If you encounter flooded streets, turn around—don’t risk driving through.
Local emergency management teams recommend moving valuables to higher ground and charging electronic devices in case of power disruptions. Today’s storms follow a wetter-than-average July in Northeast Ohio, adding to concerns for saturated soils.
The Flood Advisory remains active until 1:45 p.m., and more advisories could be issued if storms persist. Stay tuned for updates from local officials.
