CLEVELAND, Ohio – Dangerous lake conditions will develop this afternoon as strong northeast winds increase across Lake Erie, creating a high risk of rip currents and hazardous boating conditions. The National Weather Service says a Small Craft Advisory and Beach Hazards Statement will remain in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday through 8 p.m. Monday.
According to the Weather Service, winds will rise to 15 to 20 knots behind a cold front, driving waves between 3 and 6 feet, with some occasionally reaching 7 feet. The conditions will make swimming along the shoreline dangerous and may sweep swimmers away from shore through sand bars and break walls.
The advisory covers the Ohio lakeshore, including Cleveland, Lorain, and Sandusky, as well as Erie, Pennsylvania. Officials are warning small boat operators to remain in port and urging swimmers to stay out of the water until the hazards subside.
Travelers along the lakeshore should also use caution near piers and jetties, where wave action may be strongest.
Hazardous conditions are expected to ease after Monday evening as winds gradually weaken. Additional advisories could be issued if lake conditions remain elevated.
