Northeast Ohio Hit by Four Tornadoes on August 6th, 400K Lost Power

Cleveland, OH – Four tornadoes touched down in Northeast Ohio on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, leaving 400,000 residents without power and causing widespread damage across several counties. The National Weather Service confirmed that these EF-1 tornadoes impacted areas in and around the Cleveland suburbs, particularly Bay Village, Brook Park-Bedford, Kirtland-Chesterland, and Richfield-Boston.

The first tornado struck Bay Village around 3:45 PM, with winds reaching 110 mph. It traveled over eight miles, uprooting trees, damaging roofs, and snapping power lines. Another tornado touched down in Brook Park-Bedford at 3:59 PM, covering a path of 17 miles and causing significant tree and structural damage, particularly in residential neighborhoods.

According to the National Weather Service, the tornadoes resulted in no reported injuries or fatalities, though damage to homes and infrastructure was extensive. In the Kirtland-Chesterland area, a tornado with similar intensity caused tree damage and minor impacts to structures. The Richfield-Boston tornado, which struck around 4:20 PM, mainly affected industrial areas, with winds of 104 mph knocking over semitrailers and damaging a commercial warehouse.

Over 400,000 residents in the affected areas lost power as the storms tore through the region. A state of emergency was declared for the hardest-hit counties, including Lorain, Cuyahoga, Lake, and Geauga. Cleanup and recovery efforts are ongoing as residents begin to assess the full extent of the damage.
