Richmond, VA – The National Weather Service in Wakefield has expanded Winter Weather Advisories across much of Virginia and portions of northeast North Carolina, warning of light snow and dangerous road conditions throughout Monday, Dec. 8.
According to the NWS, snow will begin early this morning in central Virginia, spreading eastward into the Tidewater and Hampton Roads regions by afternoon. Most areas will see 1 to 3 inches of snow, with isolated higher totals possible in Mecklenburg, Goochland, and Caroline Counties.
In southeast Virginia and coastal North Carolina, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Elizabeth City, snow is expected later in the day, tapering off by midnight. Wind gusts up to 40 mph could create reduced visibility and blowing snow, especially along coastal routes.
Forecasters warn that both the morning and evening commutes may be affected, with slick bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads posing hazards. Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution, and check 511 or DriveNC.gov for the latest travel conditions.
Temperatures will remain near freezing overnight, increasing the risk of icy patches into early Tuesday morning.
