Duluth, Minn. – Drivers and residents across northeast Minnesota should prepare for a dangerous mix of severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, and large hail through Saturday. Travel along I-35 and Highway 61 could become hazardous during peak storm activity, with the potential for sudden flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, storms will intensify late Friday evening and persist into Saturday afternoon, especially from the Brainerd Lakes region to the North Shore. Stronger cells could produce hail up to one inch in diameter, wind gusts over 50 mph, and an isolated tornado or two. By Saturday morning, saturated ground may cause water to pool quickly, creating additional flood risks.
The most active period is expected from midnight Friday through early Saturday, with multiple waves of storms tracking east into northwest Wisconsin. Residents should secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during storm peaks, and keep devices charged in case of power outages.
Breezy and cooler conditions will follow into Sunday, with a brief break in widespread rainfall. Early next week, storm chances return Monday afternoon before drier, sunnier conditions settle in midweek.
