DULUTH, Minn. – Thick fog gripped northeast Minnesota early Wednesday, reducing visibility on I-35 and slowing morning commuters. By Thursday, September 11, skies will clear in time for Patriot Day remembrances, but more changes are on the way.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday. Drivers across St. Louis, Carlton, and Lake Counties should keep headlights on, leave extra space, and use caution on highways and rural roads. The fog is expected to lift late Wednesday morning, giving way to mostly cloudy skies.

Thursday will bring a brighter outlook, with fog early giving way to sun and a high near 65. Communities planning Patriot Day ceremonies, including Duluth and Hibbing, can expect pleasant conditions with light east winds. Organizers are encouraged to plan for cooler morning temperatures in the 50s before afternoon highs climb into the 60s.

Friday ushers in a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially by evening. While not a washout, outdoor events should be monitored. The weekend looks more settled, with sunshine and warmer highs near 70 Saturday and Sunday.

Drivers should continue to monitor updated advisories, as fall weather in the Northland often shifts quickly. Additional thunderstorm chances may return early next week.
