Elwood, Kansas – Drivers in northeast Kansas should prepare for dangerous road conditions starting Friday evening as a winter storm threatens to dump up to 6 inches of snow across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, a Winter Storm Warning goes into effect at 6 p.m. Friday and lasts through 6 p.m. Sunday, impacting cities including Troy, Elwood, Highland, and Wathena. Snow will steadily accumulate through the weekend, with the heaviest bands expected late Friday into Saturday afternoon.
Travel will become increasingly hazardous on US-36 and I-229, where slick surfaces and poor visibility are likely. Emergency management officials urge drivers to avoid non-essential travel and pack emergency kits with food, water, and flashlights if travel is unavoidable.
Residents in Doniphan County and surrounding areas should also prepare for potential power outages due to heavy, wet snow and increased demand on utilities. Local officials are monitoring conditions closely and say plow crews will be out continuously, but road conditions may deteriorate faster than they can clear.
The warning remains in effect through Sunday evening, and additional advisories could follow if the storm intensifies or lingers into early next week.
