Topeka, Kansas – An intense stretch of extreme heat is set to grip northeast and east central Kansas starting at noon Saturday, with Topeka, Manhattan, Emporia, and Lawrence all bracing for heat index values reaching up to 107 degrees through Wednesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, an Extreme Heat Warning will remain in effect for at least five days across central, north central, and northeast Kansas, including Riley, Shawnee, Douglas, Lyon, and Franklin counties. Prolonged exposure to these temperatures significantly increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for children, seniors, and anyone working outdoors.

Residents in Topeka, Manhattan, Lawrence, and Ottawa are urged to avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, wear light clothing, and stay hydrated. Local emergency officials caution that car interiors can become deadly in minutes, and recommend checking on neighbors and relatives who may be vulnerable. Outdoor workers should follow OSHA guidance by taking frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.

This dangerous heatwave could extend beyond Wednesday if high temperatures persist, with health risks increasing each day the warning remains in effect. Stay alert for additional advisories and limit non-essential outdoor activities until cooler weather returns.
