West Union, IA – Fayette County deputies are urging drivers to slow down and use caution today after four weather-related ditch crashes were reported between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Slick and shifting road conditions continue to trouble rural stretches across Northeast Iowa as winter weather settles into the region.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the first incident occurred at approximately 11:53 p.m. on December 6, 2025, when deputies were dispatched to the 7,000 block of Harding Road. Investigators determined that 46-year-old Augustin Wall of West Union was traveling eastbound when he allegedly lost control due to road conditions, sending his 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe into the south ditch. No injuries were reported, though the vehicle sustained minor damage.

Just minutes later, around 11:06 p.m., deputies responded to another weather-related crash on Highway 150, where a driver slid into a ditch and struck a street sign. That case also resulted in no injuries.

Two more ditch crashes followed early Sunday. At 2:17 a.m., a juvenile driver slid off W Avenue and 40th Street in a 2008 Chevy Silverado while traveling toward Fairbank. Minimal damage occurred.

A final incident was located at 5:26 a.m. at 100th Street and N Avenue, where 18-year-old Raeleigh Hepker of Maynard allegedly lost control of her 2014 Ford Edge and entered the south ditch. No injuries or damage were reported.

With four slide-offs occurring within a roughly six-hour window, deputies say the pattern highlights worsening travel conditions across Fayette County. Motorists are encouraged to reduce speeds, especially on gravel roads, curves, and shaded stretches where ice may not be visible.
