Platteville, Wisconsin – A fast-moving band of snow is expected to sweep across northeast Iowa and far southwest Wisconsin late today and tonight, creating slippery travel conditions during the evening commute and overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. this evening through 6 a.m. Wednesday for Clayton and Fayette counties in Iowa and Grant County in Wisconsin. Snow will develop late this afternoon and continue through the night, with widespread totals of 2 to 4 inches expected.
Forecasters say a narrow band of moderate snowfall may set up south of Highway 18, particularly across parts of northeast Iowa and far southwest Wisconsin. In that zone, snowfall totals could reach or exceed 3 inches in a relatively short time. Areas along and south of Interstate 90 are most likely to see the highest impacts.
Communities including Elkader, Oelwein, Platteville, and surrounding rural areas may see roads quickly become snow-covered, especially during the Tuesday evening commute. Visibility could drop during heavier bursts of snow, making travel hazardous on untreated roads and bridges.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check road conditions before traveling. Snow is expected to taper off toward early Wednesday morning, but lingering slick spots may remain for the morning commute. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall bands intensify or shift.
