Rochester, Minn. – Funnel clouds may develop across southeast Minnesota into northeast Iowa this afternoon as unstable air fuels brief but potentially dangerous storms. The National Weather Service in La Crosse warns the window of concern continues through 7 p.m.

According to the agency, most funnels of this type rarely touch the ground and typically pose little to no threat to life or property. However, on the rare occasion one does reach the surface, it becomes a tornado capable of causing damage and injury.

Communities along the I-90 corridor, including Rochester, Albert Lea, and Mason City, should stay weather-aware and be ready to seek shelter in a sturdy building if a funnel approaches the ground. Motorists are urged to avoid stopping under bridges or overpasses, as strong winds can intensify in those areas.

The National Weather Service stresses that while widespread damage is not expected, residents should remain alert for sudden changes in sky conditions, especially in open farmland where funnels are easier to spot.

The funnel cloud threat is expected to diminish after sunset, but more storm chances may return later this weekend.
