Chicago, Illinois – Scattered thunderstorms could sweep across parts of Illinois this afternoon, with the greatest risk between 3 and 8 p.m. CDT, bringing gusty winds, frequent lightning, and pockets of torrential rain.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the threat level remains marginal (Level 1 of 5), but isolated storms could intensify quickly, producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and localized downpours. Storms are expected to track northeast at around 25 mph. While some areas may stay dry, others could see sudden and brief severe conditions.

Communities in Cook, DuPage, Lake, and Will counties should be on alert during the evening commute. Outdoor events and travel may be disrupted where storms develop. The hit-or-miss pattern makes it critical to stay weather-aware.

If thunder is heard, move indoors immediately. Extra caution is advised while driving in heavy rain or on wet roads. These storms may also lead to brief street flooding, especially in urban areas with poor drainage.

Storm activity could linger into the early morning hours. Additional updates may follow if stronger cells form or if watches are issued later today.
