Kankakee, Ill. – Streets in parts of northeastern Illinois are quickly becoming impassable early Sunday as torrential rainfall triggers a flash flood warning across multiple counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, radar detected storms producing rainfall rates up to three inches per hour across Kankakee, Grundy, Will, Kendall, and Iroquois counties. Between one and two inches have already fallen, with another two to three inches possible before the storms move out. The warning remains in effect until 7:15 a.m.
Communities including Kankakee, Bourbonnais, Bradley, Morris, Channahon, Minooka, and Manteno are at greatest risk. Low-lying neighborhoods, underpasses, and drainage ditches may flood quickly, and officials warn drivers to avoid traveling on water-covered roads. The National Weather Service emphasizes the reminder: “Turn around, don’t drown.”
Flooding concerns could linger through the morning commute if rainfall continues to overwhelm storm drains. Emergency crews are urging residents to prepare for road closures and potential detours.
More heavy rain is possible later in the day as unsettled weather continues across northern Illinois. Additional warnings may be issued if storms redevelop.
