Chicago, Illinois – Periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected across the Chicago region today, with a few storms capable of becoming severe, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service in Chicago said thunderstorms this morning produced heavy downpours and small hail, with additional scattered storms expected this afternoon, particularly near and southeast of Interstate 55. Forecasters warn that some of these storms could turn severe.
The primary threat is damaging wind gusts, with gusts potentially reaching up to 65 mph in the strongest storms. The Weather Service also noted a low chance of a brief tornado or two, along with the possibility of small hail and frequent lightning.
Storms are expected to continue through late Sunday afternoon, moving quickly across the region. Heavy downpours could lead to localized ponding of water, especially in areas that see repeated rainfall.
Officials urge residents to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and to use caution while driving in heavy rain. Fast-moving storms may allow limited time to seek shelter if warnings are issued.
For commuters, workers, and outdoor events across northeast Illinois, storms may disrupt travel and activities during the afternoon hours.
Additional updates and any warnings will be issued by the National Weather Service as storms develop.
