Chicago, IL – A winter weather advisory is in effect for northeast Illinois as freezing rain and icy conditions are expected to impact travel through early Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory covers portions of north-central and northeast Illinois, including the Chicago metropolitan area. Mixed precipitation, including freezing rain and sleet, will lead to ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch, with snow and sleet totals reaching one inch. The advisory remains in place from 3 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, especially on bridges and overpasses, which may become slick and hazardous. Commuters should prepare for delays and exercise caution, particularly during the Wednesday evening rush hour.

Officials urge drivers to reduce speeds, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary trips if possible. Pedestrians should also be cautious of icy sidewalks.

This winter weather event marks a significant hazard for northeast Illinois, with potential power outages and minor tree damage due to ice accumulation. Travelers should monitor local forecasts and prepare for changing conditions.
