Chicago, Illinois – Overnight downpours have triggered multiple flood advisories across northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana, leaving drivers and residents facing waterlogged streets through Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service reports between 2 and 4 inches of rain fell late Monday, overwhelming drainage systems and swelling local creeks.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, advisories remain in effect until 10:30 a.m. for Cook, DuPage, Kane, Will and Kendall counties in Illinois, and until 10:15 a.m. for Lake and Porter counties in Indiana. Water is expected to remain on roadways in Chicago, Aurora, Joliet, Naperville, Gary and Valparaiso as runoff continues to drain.
Low-lying neighborhoods in Aurora, Oswego, and Yorkville have already reported ponding water, while urban flooding has slowed traffic near Cicero, Oak Lawn, and Orland Park. In Indiana, Merrillville, Chesterton, and Highland are also seeing standing water.
Officials urge drivers not to attempt to cross flooded intersections, as even shallow water can disable vehicles. Residents are advised to give themselves extra time for the morning commute and avoid flood-prone roads where possible.
Flood advisories remain in place until mid-morning Tuesday, with the potential for additional warnings if storms redevelop later in the day.
