Athens, Georgia – Large hail and strong winds could hit northeast Georgia between 2 and 8 p.m. Wednesday as isolated severe thunderstorms develop across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, storms are expected to form during peak heating hours, with quarter-sized hail being the primary concern. Damaging wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour are also possible. The highest risk includes cities like Athens, Gainesville, and Toccoa, where outdoor activities and travel may be disrupted.

Communities across Habersham, Hall, Clarke, and surrounding counties are urged to remain weather-aware through the evening. The storms could lead to scattered power outages, downed tree limbs, and slick roads, especially during the evening commute. Residents are advised to move vehicles under shelter, secure outdoor items, and avoid driving during heavy downpours or high winds.

This Level 1 (Marginal Risk) threat follows several days of warm, humid conditions across north and central Georgia, which are fueling storm development. Although tornadoes are not expected, the NWS warns that isolated cells could intensify rapidly.

Additional updates and potential warnings may be issued throughout the day as the system evolves. Stay tuned to local alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
