Jacksonville, Fla. – Dangerous rip currents and coastal flooding will impact northeast Florida and southeast Georgia beaches through midweek, with the National Weather Service warning swimmers and boaters to stay alert. Large waves up to 9 feet and high surf conditions are expected to cause hazardous swimming, localized flooding, and beach erosion.

According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday, while a High Surf Advisory continues until 2 a.m. Friday. The strongest impacts are expected around high tide, when minor flooding of roads, lots, and parks along the shoreline could occur.

Communities including Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Fernandina Beach, and Brunswick, Ga., are most at risk. Rip currents strong enough to sweep even experienced swimmers offshore are likely, and lifeguards urge beachgoers to swim only in protected areas. Drivers should also watch for water covering coastal roadways during evening tides.

Residents are advised to avoid non-essential water activity, keep phones charged, and monitor updates in case additional advisories are issued.
