Denver, Colorado – A hard freeze could hit much of northeast Colorado, southwest Nebraska, and northwest Kansas this weekend, with temperatures expected to dip as low as 29 degrees by early Sunday. The National Weather Service in Goodland issued a Freeze Watch in effect from Saturday evening through Sunday morning, warning residents to take precautions for sensitive vegetation and plumbing.

According to the NWS Goodland office, frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and damage unprotected outdoor plumbing across counties including Yuma, Kit Carson, Cheyenne (CO), Cheyenne (KS), Rawlins, Sherman, Dundy, Hitchcock, and Red Willow. Farmers and gardeners are urged to cover plants or bring them indoors before the chill sets in.

Residents are also advised to drain in-ground sprinkler systems and wrap or insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing. Even a brief dip below 32 degrees could lead to costly damage if systems aren’t winterized in time.

The coldest air is expected before sunrise Sunday, with slightly warmer temperatures returning by Monday afternoon. Updates and potential advisories are expected if the freeze risk continues into early next week.
