Reno, Nev. – Triple-digit heat will scorch much of western Nevada and northeast California today, with some areas topping 103 degrees before a cooler pattern moves in midweek. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms—mainly along the Sierra and Sierra Front—could bring brief gusty winds and lightning.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, storm chances range from 15% to 30% west of U.S. 95 in western Nevada and south of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Valleys. Northeast California faces a smaller 10% to 15% risk, but any storms that form could spark new fire starts in the region’s dry grasslands.

Highs are expected to reach 98 to 103 degrees in western Nevada, 86 to 93 in the Sierra Valleys, and 94 to 102 in northeast California. Overnight lows will range from the upper 40s in higher elevations to low 70s in valley floors. Residents should limit strenuous outdoor activity, drink plenty of water, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

Cooler weather arrives Wednesday, with highs dropping by 10 degrees or more by the end of the week. Additional thunderstorm chances may return over the weekend.
