New York, N.Y. – A powerful bomb cyclone is hammering the Northeast tonight with relentless, wind-driven snow, triggering travel bans and emergency-only restrictions across multiple states as officials warn of growing health risks tied to heavy snow cleanup. Conditions will worsen overnight and remain dangerous through Monday from the Mid-Atlantic into northern New England.

According to NOAA and the National Weather Service, blizzard warnings stretch from eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey through New York and into much of New England, including Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Winter storm warnings extend farther inland across upstate New York, Vermont and Maine. Heavy snow bands combined with strong winds will reduce visibility to near zero at times, creating treacherous conditions along Interstate 95, Interstate 90 and Interstate 84. State agencies are urging residents to avoid travel except in emergencies as plow crews work around the clock.

Beyond the roadway danger, the storm’s dense, moisture-packed snow presents a serious health concern. This is not light powder. The heavy accumulation adds strain to trees and power lines from Philadelphia to Boston and into Portland, increasing the risk of outages.

Health officials across the region warn that shoveling heavy snow can sharply increase heart strain. Residents should take frequent breaks, stay hydrated and push snow instead of lifting it whenever possible. Older adults and those with heart or respiratory conditions should avoid clearing snow alone.

If travel cannot be postponed, drivers should carry a winter emergency kit and remain inside their vehicle if stranded. Snow and strong winds will peak Monday before gradually tapering into Tuesday. Additional advisories and extended restrictions remain possible.
