Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – Severe thunderstorms are expected to rapidly intensify across western Oklahoma within hours, bringing a threat of tornadoes, destructive winds, and large hail into the evening commute.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, storms will develop early Wednesday afternoon and strengthen quickly by late afternoon, with peak intensity expected between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. across western and central Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City, Norman, and Enid.

The most dangerous storms could produce wind gusts over 75 mph, hail larger than 2 inches in diameter, and a few tornadoes, some of which could be strong if storms remain isolated. The highest risk corridor stretches from near Lawton through Oklahoma City into north-central Oklahoma and southern Kansas.

Travel along I-35 and I-44 could become hazardous during the evening commute, with sudden drops in visibility and debris possible in stronger storms. Power outages and localized damage may also occur where storms intensify.

Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and be ready to take shelter quickly if warnings are issued. Additional watches and warnings are likely as storms develop through Wednesday evening.
