Oklahoma City, OK – Brutal heat will blanket much of Oklahoma and North Texas today as heat index values climb as high as 110°F, prompting a Heat Advisory in effect from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. CDT Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, dangerously high humidity and scorching afternoon temperatures will combine across 60+ counties, including Oklahoma, Cleveland, Payne, Comanche, and Jackson. Residents across metro areas like Oklahoma City, Norman, Lawton, and Stillwater are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak hours.

Cities from Enid to Durant and Ardmore to Altus could feel the brunt, especially those without access to air conditioning or shade. Outdoor workers, athletes, and vulnerable populations are at high risk for heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Emergency officials recommend drinking plenty of water, checking on elderly neighbors, and never leaving children or pets in vehicles.

This is the fifth consecutive heat advisory for parts of the region this July — a trend consistent with record-hot summers seen in 2011 and 2022.

Temperatures will ease slightly after sunset, but another advisory may be issued Friday if the pattern holds.
