North Texas – Arctic air moving into the region Friday is expected to bring prolonged freezing temperatures and a growing risk of winter precipitation, increasing travel and infrastructure concerns across much of North and Central Texas.

According to the National Weather Service Fort Worth, confidence has increased that at least minor winter impacts will occur as Arctic air combines with a mix of snow and ice, with impacts possible from Friday night through the weekend. The highest likelihood for snow-related impacts is expected across northern counties, including areas near Graham, Sherman, and Paris, while ice impacts are more likely farther south, including Cisco, Waco, Killeen, Canton, and Palestine.

Forecast guidance shows temperatures falling below freezing Friday night, remaining below 32°F through at least Sunday afternoon for most of North and Central Texas. Parts of northern Texas may not climb above freezing again until Monday.

The coldest period is expected Saturday night, when the NWS indicates a 30–50% chance of overnight low temperatures at or below 10°F across northern counties, including the Red River region. Areas farther south, including the DFW Metroplex, also face a notable risk of single-digit wind chills.

Hazardous travel conditions are possible, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways, where ice may develop. The NWS also warns of potential disruptions to infrastructure, including an increased risk of pipe freezes and bursts due to prolonged cold.

Residents are urged to follow the “4 P’s”: protect people, pets, pipes, and plants, monitor forecast updates, and locate water shut-off valves in advance. Young workers, students, and weekend travelers should plan for possible delays during overnight and early-morning hours.

Forecast details regarding precipitation type, coverage, and exact timing may change. Additional updates are expected in the coming days.
