North Platte, Nebraska – Fires could ignite and spread out of control within minutes across western and central Nebraska by early Monday afternoon as powerful winds and extremely dry air peak during the daytime hours.
According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon Monday through 7 a.m. Tuesday, covering the Sandhills, Niobrara Valley, Frenchman Basin, and the eastern Panhandle. West winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph with gusts reaching 40 mph by midafternoon, before shifting north overnight with gusts exceeding 45 mph.
Relative humidity will drop as low as 10 to 15 percent during peak heating, while temperatures climb into the mid to upper 80s. The combination creates ideal conditions for rapid fire growth. Isolated dry lightning strikes are also possible late Monday, especially across the Sandhills and western Nebraska, increasing the risk for new fire starts without rainfall.
Areas near Valentine, Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and Fort Niobrara face heightened concern, especially along open grasslands and forest edges. Any spark—from equipment, vehicles, or outdoor burning—could quickly escalate.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and report smoke immediately. Fire risk remains elevated overnight as winds shift and intensify.
Warnings remain in effect through early Tuesday morning, and additional alerts could follow if conditions persist.
