Portland, Ore. – Drivers in the North Oregon Coast Range could encounter snow-covered roads and icy bridges within minutes, as steady snow showers continue above 1,000 feet and persist through 4 a.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Portland, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Coast Range lowlands, including Vernonia, Jewell, Knappa and the Grand Ronde area. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with locally higher totals possible depending on where heavier snow bands set up through Thursday night.

Snow is sticking quickly on shaded highways and elevated surfaces, especially along Highway 26 and Highway 47 near Vernonia. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first as temperatures hover near or below freezing. The showery nature of the system means snowfall rates may vary, but bursts of heavier snow could rapidly reduce traction.

Residents should carry chains and a winter driving kit, including blankets, water and a flashlight. Pedestrians should also use caution on untreated sidewalks.

Snow showers will continue in waves through Thursday night before tapering early Friday. Road conditions can be checked at TripCheck.com or by calling 511. Additional advisories may follow if snow bands intensify.
