PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – Snow returns to western Pennsylvania tonight as a quick-moving system pushes into the region, bringing light accumulation before a changeover to rain on Sunday morning. The steadiest snow is expected overnight, with the highest totals north of the city.
According to the National Weather Service, snow begins late this evening and continues into early Sunday before mixing with or changing to rain after daybreak. Most areas around Pittsburgh will collect around an inch, while communities north of I-80 — including Oil City, Clarion, and parts of Venango and Forest counties — have the best chance for 2 inches or more.
Roads may turn slick late tonight as temperatures hover near freezing. Elevated surfaces and untreated secondary roads are most vulnerable to quick light accumulation. Drivers heading north toward I-79, Route 422, or I-80 should use caution, especially before sunrise when the changeover to rain has not yet occurred.
A Winter Weather Advisory may be issued for portions of northwest Pennsylvania if confidence increases in 3 inches or more of snow across the higher terrain. Farther south, any accumulation will be brief as warmer air arrives early Sunday.
Snow ends by midday Sunday, but another system may bring broader wintry weather Monday night into Tuesday. Further updates are expected as the next round approaches.
