Memphis, Tennessee – A crippling ice storm is expected to shut down travel and cause long-lasting power outages across parts of North Mississippi and West Tennessee beginning Friday evening and lasting through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 p.m. Sunday. Ice accumulations between one-half inch and one inch are expected, along with one to three inches of snow and sleet. Officials warn that the weight of the ice could lead to extensive tree damage and power outages lasting more than a day, especially in rural areas.
Communities including Memphis, Tupelo, Oxford, Corinth, Batesville, Senatobia, Holly Springs, Pontotoc, New Albany, Savannah, Selmer, and Henderson are expected to see rapidly deteriorating conditions Friday evening. Major routes such as Interstate 40, Interstate 55, U.S. Highway 51, and U.S. Highway 72 are likely to become ice-covered, with bridges and overpasses especially dangerous.
Emergency managers urge residents to restrict travel to emergencies only and prepare for extended power interruptions. Residents should charge electronic devices, secure alternative heat sources if safe to do so, and have food, water, and flashlights ready. Road conditions can be monitored by calling 511.
The Ice Storm Warning remains in effect through Sunday evening, and additional advisories could be issued if ice accumulations increase or outages become widespread across the Mid-South.
