Kellogg, Idaho – Drivers in the central Idaho Panhandle will see rapidly deteriorating road conditions Sunday evening as snow develops across higher terrain, setting up a slick and hazardous Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. Monday for the Central Panhandle Mountains. Areas above 3,000 feet, including Lookout Pass, Dobson Pass, and Fourth of July Pass, are expected to receive 1 to 5 inches of snow, while lower elevations around Kellogg, Wallace, Osburn, and Pinehurst may see a trace to one inch.

Snow-covered roads and reduced visibility are likely overnight, especially along I-90 near Lookout Pass, where elevation-driven snowfall will accumulate quickly. Secondary mountain roads near Fernwood, Mullan, and St. Maries may become slick and snow-packed, increasing the risk of spinouts during the early morning drive.

Idaho Transportation Department crews are expected to treat primary corridors, but motorists are urged to slow down, leave extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden braking. Checking road conditions through 5-1-1 before traveling is strongly recommended.

Snow tapers off Monday morning, but lingering slick spots may persist on shaded mountain roads beyond the advisory expiration. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall totals trend higher than expected.
