Gainesville, Georgia – Roads across north central and northeast Georgia could become nearly impassable beginning Saturday afternoon as a prolonged ice storm spreads freezing rain across the region, raising the risk of widespread power outages and dangerous travel through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, an Ice Storm Warning remains in effect from Saturday afternoon through Monday morning for Dawson, Lumpkin, White, Forsyth, Hall, Banks, Jackson, and Madison counties. Ice accumulations between a quarter inch and one inch are expected, with wind gusts up to 30 mph increasing the likelihood of downed trees and power lines.
Freezing rain is expected to develop Saturday afternoon and continue through Sunday, steadily coating roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces. Areas including Gainesville, Dahlonega, Cumming, Cleveland, Commerce, and Dawsonville are likely to see rapidly deteriorating travel conditions. Even treated roads may become slick as ice continues to accumulate, especially overnight and during periods of steadier precipitation.
Utility crews are preparing for possible outages, but officials warn that significant icing combined with gusty winds could lead to prolonged power disruptions. Travel is strongly discouraged, particularly late Sunday into early Monday when ice buildup peaks and temperatures remain below freezing.
Residents are urged to complete preparations early, charge devices, and have flashlights, food, and water ready in case of extended outages. Road conditions can be checked by calling 511. The Ice Storm Warning remains in effect through Monday morning, and additional advisories may follow as conditions evolve.
