Blairsville, Ga. – Slow-moving thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding across the mountains of northeast Georgia between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. today, creating dangerous travel conditions along streams, creeks, and low-lying roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, isolated rainfall totals between 1 and 4 inches are possible, with a 15% chance of flash flooding near the Blue Ridge Mountains and surrounding areas. The heaviest downpours are expected around Blairsville and Gainesville, with runoff potentially overwhelming drainage systems.
Drivers along U.S. 76, State Route 60, and other mountain routes are urged to use caution. The storms may develop quickly and stall, raising the risk of localized flooding and dangerous travel. Outdoor recreation near rivers and hiking trails could also become hazardous as creeks rise rapidly.
Residents should stay alert for changing weather conditions and be prepared to move to higher ground if warnings are issued. Lightning strikes and gusty winds may also accompany the afternoon storms.
The flash flood threat is expected to diminish after 8 p.m., but additional showers may redevelop into the evening.
