Dahlonega, Georgia – A potentially high-impact winter storm could bring dangerous travel conditions and power outages across north Georgia beginning late Friday night, with impacts lasting through Monday morning. Roads may become slick or impassable as snow, sleet, and freezing rain spread across the region, raising concerns for the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Monday morning for portions of north central, northeast, and northwest Georgia. Snow and sleet accumulations of up to 4 inches are possible, along with ice buildup exceeding one quarter inch, enough to damage trees and power lines.

Communities including Dahlonega, Gainesville, Dalton, Rome, Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Jasper, Cleveland, Woodstock, and Cumming are within the watch area. Elevated roadways and mountain routes, including portions of I-75, I-575, U.S. 19, and U.S. 76, are expected to become hazardous quickly as temperatures drop and precipitation freezes.

Emergency officials warn that ice accumulation may lead to scattered to widespread power outages and downed tree limbs. Residents are urged to complete preparations early, avoid unnecessary travel Saturday and Sunday, and ensure vehicles and homes are ready for prolonged cold and possible utility disruptions.

The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through Monday morning. Additional advisories or warnings are likely as confidence increases in ice and snow impacts across north Georgia.
