Atlanta, Georgia – Steady rain is soaking north and central Georgia today, bringing a growing risk for localized flooding, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Heaviest downpours could overwhelm roads and low-lying areas across Atlanta and surrounding communities by Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, rainfall totals will generally reach 1 to 2 inches across much of the region, but slow-moving storms could deliver more than 4 inches in isolated spots. The flood threat is highest this afternoon and evening, when back-to-back rounds of heavy rain are most likely. Areas with poor drainage or recent rainfall are at greatest risk, including travel corridors like I-285, GA 400, and surface streets prone to flooding.
Residents are urged to stay alert for rapidly changing conditions and never drive across flooded roadways. Officials recommend having a way to receive warnings and updates in case flash flood alerts are issued. If you see water over the road, turn around and find an alternate route.
Flooding concerns will linger through the night before rain chances begin to taper by Monday. Additional weather advisories may be posted if storms continue or new rounds of heavy rain develop.
