Atlanta, Ga. – A tropical-like weather pattern is set to bring widespread showers and slow-moving thunderstorms to northern Georgia through Tuesday night, with the potential for flash flooding in some areas. Isolated downpours could drop as much as 4 inches of rain, especially in parts of the state’s north and north-central region.
According to the National Weather Service in Atlanta, most locations can expect 1 to 1.5 inches of rain, but localized totals will be higher where storms stall. Communities from Dalton and Blairsville to Gainesville, Athens, and metro Atlanta are in the zone of greatest concern. The Weather Prediction Center has highlighted this region for excessive rainfall risk, warning that saturated ground could lead to dangerous flash flooding.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways, as even shallow water can be hazardous. Officials advise having multiple ways to receive alerts, including NOAA Weather Radio and mobile notifications, as storms may redevelop in the same areas.
Flash flood risk remains in place until late Tuesday, with the potential for additional advisories if storms persist.
