Atlanta, GA – Residents across North Georgia are facing heightened fire danger today, followed by the threat of severe storms this weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Peachtree City.
According to the NWS, relative humidity levels will drop below 25 percent this afternoon into the evening, creating hazardous fire conditions. Combined with dry fuels and west to northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph, the risk of wildfires spreading rapidly is elevated. Counties affected by this fire danger warning include Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Chattooga, Gordon, Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin, White, Floyd, Bartow, and Cherokee. Residents are urged to check with local burn permitting authorities before conducting any outdoor burning and to use extreme caution.
Looking ahead, the NWS has also highlighted the potential for severe weather across North and Central Georgia late Saturday into early Sunday. A strong storm system moving in from the west could bring damaging winds, hail, and possible tornadoes. Areas most at risk include northern and western Georgia, though storms could impact a wider region.
Officials advise residents to stay updated on weather alerts, review personal severe weather preparedness plans, and be ready for potential rapid weather changes.
Dry conditions will persist through midweek, with a chance of showers on Thursday before the weekend storms arrive.
