Tallahassee, Florida – Dangerous Arctic cold is moving into North Florida today, bringing hazardous wind chills, freezing temperatures, and widespread cold-related impacts overnight into Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, an Arctic cold front is passing through the region, allowing much colder air to settle across the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend. Wind chills are expected to drop into the teens and possibly single digits in some locations, while actual air temperatures fall to hard-freeze levels by late tonight.
The coldest period is forecast from late Saturday night through Sunday morning. Areas along and north of Interstate 10 are expected to see the most significant impacts, though subfreezing temperatures may extend farther south. Some locations may struggle to reach 40 degrees during the day today, with highs remaining well below seasonal averages through the weekend.
Officials warn that prolonged exposure to these conditions can be dangerous. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur quickly when wind chills fall into the teens. Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, limit time outdoors, and bring pets indoors. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those without adequate heating, may be at increased risk.
The National Weather Service also advises taking precautions to protect pipes, plants, and sensitive infrastructure from freezing conditions. Motorists traveling overnight or early Sunday, particularly along I-10 and nearby highways, should be prepared for bitter cold conditions that could affect roadside safety.
While temperatures are expected to gradually recover early next week, the immediate focus remains on tonight’s cold. Officials stress that this is a high-impact cold event for North Florida and should be taken seriously.
